New York Cannabis Purchase and Possession Limits, Both Channels

The medical channel figure, stated precisely

OCM states that registered organizations may dispense up to a 60-day supply, or the Penal Law limits of 3 ounces of cannabis and 24 grams of concentrate, whichever is greater. Both halves of that sentence matter: it is not simply 3 ounces, and it is not simply a 60-day supply. It is whichever of the two is larger in your case.

OCM also states that dispensing must follow any recommendations or limitations recorded by the health care provider on the certification. So the practical ceiling is often not the statutory one. It is whatever your provider wrote.

There is no published table converting a 60-day supply into grams, because there is not meant to be one. Your provider determines it. If you want to know your number, ask them, not a dispensary and not this page.

The adult-use figure

New York's Penal Law possession limits for adults 21 and over are 3 ounces of cannabis and 24 grams of concentrate. Those are the figures Leafology operates against, and they are the same numbers that form the floor of the medical dispensing rule above.

A certification does not raise your adult-use possession limit. It does not raise it at Leafology, and a discount at the register has nothing to do with possession. Those are separate systems that happen to share a number.

Where the two channels genuinely differ

Eligibility. Adult use requires being 21 or older with a valid government-issued photo ID and nothing else. The medical channel requires an active certification and a government-issued photo ID, and it is open to patients under 18 through a designated caregiver.

Product access. Medical-program products are dispensed by registered organizations, which OCM states are required to have a pharmacist on site. Leafology is an adult-use retailer and carries neither medical-program products nor a pharmacist.

Supply ceiling. Adult use is bounded by the possession limits. The medical channel is bounded by the greater of those limits or a provider-determined 60-day supply, minus any tighter limit the provider recorded.

Tax. New York charges retail taxes totaling 13% on adult-use sales. The medical program carries a separate 3.15% excise imposed on the registered organization rather than charged to the patient at retail.

What this means at the Leafology counter
