What to Bring to a New York Dispensary, Medical or Adult Use

What you bring depends entirely on which channel you are shopping. An adult-use dispensary like Leafology needs one thing: a valid government-issued photo ID showing you are 21 or older.

A registered medical dispensary needs two: your active certification, on paper or on your phone, plus a government-issued photo ID. New York no longer issues physical registry ID cards.

Adult use: one document

A valid government-issued photo ID proving you are 21 or older. A driver's license, state ID, passport, or military ID all work, and out-of-state and foreign IDs are ordinary. That is the whole requirement at Leafology and at every other licensed adult-use retailer in New York.

You do not need a certification, a registration, a residency, an appointment, or a membership. If a store tells you otherwise, ask why.

Medical channel: two documents

Your active certification and a government-issued photo ID. OCM states that dispensaries are required to verify your identity using both, and that the certification may be a paper copy or displayed on a smart device.

There is no card to bring. OCM states registry ID cards are no longer being issued; the registry ID lives on the certification itself.

If you are a designated caregiver purchasing on a patient's behalf, bring the patient's certification, your own caregiver registry ID, and a government-issued photo ID. For patients under 18 or unable to consent, the program requires one designated caregiver, auto-registered by the certifying provider at the time of certification.

Payment, and the thing that surprises people

Check the store’s current payment options before visiting and the methods offered for your order at checkout. Payment availability depends on the store and processor; do not assume a particular payment restriction is a New York legal requirement.

This trips up more first visits than any other detail, and it is worth knowing before you are at the counter with a full basket.

Worth bringing even though nobody asks for it

If you have a medical certification and want to ask about a patient offer, bring the documentation and ask staff about current terms. A certification does not change a Leafology adult-use purchase into a medical-program sale.

Bring product questions for store staff. Discuss your medication list and health history privately with your healthcare provider or pharmacist; retail staff do not need that information to explain a product label.

Questions. Write them down. Call ahead if you would like more time with a team member. Product questions belong with store staff; clinical questions belong with your healthcare provider.

  1. What do I need to bring to a dispensary in New York?

For an adult-use dispensary like Leafology, a valid government-issued photo ID showing you are 21 or older, and nothing else. For a registered medical dispensary, your active certification, on paper or on a smart device, plus a government-issued photo ID. OCM states dispensaries verify both.
  2. Do I need a medical card to shop at Leafology?

No. Leafology is a licensed adult-use dispensary. Adults 21 and older with valid government-issued photo ID can shop without a medical certification. Ask staff about any current patient offer if you already have a certification.
  3. Can I use a credit card at a New York dispensary?

Not at Leafology. Credit cards cannot be processed for cannabis under federal banking rules, which affects the industry generally rather than one store. Leafology accepts cash and debit.
  4. Can someone else pick up cannabis for me?

In the medical channel, yes, through a designated caregiver, who brings the patient's certification, their own caregiver registry ID, and a government-issued photo ID. At an adult-use store like Leafology, every purchase is made by the customer with their own 21 plus photo ID.
  5. Do I need an appointment at Leafology?

Leafology is an adult-use dispensary at 244 Main Street, Suite 1, White Plains, NY 10601. Monday through Saturday 8:00 AM - 10:00 PM; Sunday 8:00 AM - 8:00 PM.
